Remembering Maureen: A Tribute to a Courageous and Beautiful Friend
Today marks the two year anniversary (1 May 2026) of when Maureen left us, a day to reflect on a remarkable soul whose life was defined by quiet courage, unwavering positivity, and a deep, enduring commitment to her community. Whether she was helping children cross the road with a welcoming smile, volunteering her time for the RSL, or soaring high in a Tiger Moth at the age of 72, Maureen approached every moment with an open and fearless heart.
Maureen’s mindset throughout her life was one of pure resilience and joy. She often described herself as a positive thinker, someone who believed that if there was something you were scared to do but truly wanted to experience, you should simply take the leap. That adventurous spirit did not just stop at sky-high aerobatics; it carried her through profound life changes and the loss of her beloved husband, John. Even when her health declined, she remained devoted to her family and community, finding strength in her loved ones and cherishing every connection that came her way.

Her outlook on education was deeply personal and transformative. For twenty-eight years at the John Paul College crossing, she viewed her role as far more than just traffic duty. She saw it as an opportunity to mentor, connect with, and care for the school community. At the start of each year, she would warmly welcome the students, and as they prepared to graduate, she would talk with the Year 12s about their future aspirations. She genuinely wanted to know their hopes, offering a comforting and encouraging presence that resonated with generations of students and earned her the recognition she so truly deserved.
Our friendship began in the most spontaneous and beautiful way, simply by walking across the road to introduce myself. From that first introduction grew a wonderful bond built on mutual respect, deep conversations, and warm exchanges. I will always cherish these moments and the way she made others feel special. She was an ever-smiling presence, a wise confidante, and an inspiration to live authentically and bravely, even through her toughest health battles.

As I remember Maureen today, I honour a legacy that teaches us to cherish our loved ones, face life's challenges with a smile, and always remain courageous. I remember the warmth of her presence, her infectious optimism, and the beautiful friendship that continues to resonate in my heart.
